How to Automatically Calculate Deadhead Miles in Truckpedia

Truckpedia now automatically calculates deadhead miles using the driver’s last known drop-off location. If your driver has completed a previous load, you can instantly pull their last destination and calculate the empty miles to their next pick-up — no manual math or mapping tools needed.   Here’s how it works in action:

Step 1: Head to the Dispatch Module

From your dashboard, go to the Dispatch module on the left side— we recommend using List View for quicker navigation.

Step 2: Find the Driver

Use the search bar to locate the driver whose load you’re working on. Keep in mind, this feature only works if the driver has at least one previous load in the system.

Step 3: Open the Load

Click Edit on one of their current or upcoming loads.

Step 4: Add Driver’s Start Location

Once you're inside the load, scroll down to Step 4 in the load form and by default, the Empty Miles field will be blank. Now, click “+ Add Driver’s Location”

You’ll now see the option:
→ Pull location from previous load

The moment you click it, Truckpedia will fetch the address from the driver’s last completed load and use it to calculate empty (deadhead) miles which can be read at the right corner under ‘miles’

Step 5: View Results

You’ll instantly see both Loaded Miles and Empty Miles displayed, like this:

In this example, Truckpedia calculated 429.88 empty miles from the previous location to the new pick-up — all without any manual input.
